The Wilshire index 5000 covers the majority of public listed companies in the U.S.. The index tracks more than 6000 real companies. Index funds tend to buy that item a representative sample of companies. It would be too expensive and difficult to buy them all. Check the NYSE, AMEX, NASDAQ and pinksheets.com sites
